Type "*^" in DisplayFormula or Equation cells?

Hi,

Whenever I type "*^" while in a DisplayFormula or Equation cell (i.e. for presentation of a formula), it replaces the shortcut before I'm able to finish typing in the exponent I need.

As an example, try typing in "6.24*^18" which should result in "6.24 * 10^18" but Mathematica doesn't wait for you to finish and instead just moves the decimal place one over after you type the 1. I've tried many ways to avoid this (parentheses, etc.) and the only way that works is typing 6.2418 then going back and adding the "*^" between the two numbers.

I suppose I could do this, but it's aggravating that a shortcut as useful as this one is bugging out.

Thanks for your help in advance!

I am still confused about this. Does anyone understand why this replacement happens? In what context is this convenient at all?

It seems like a bug. Is it?

If I type 12*^3, I get 12.^3. This surely has to be a bug.

EDIT: I see what it's supposed to do now. Typing 1.2*^3 results in $1.2\times 10^3$. This can be a minor convenience. What happens when there is no decimal point at all seems to be a bug though.

You can also type a space, or an [InvisibleSpace], between * and ^.

Keep a text cell handy, type numbers there, then copy-paste in DisplayFormula ?
