Visualization Internship– Summer '18 [Wolfram]

Wolfram, creator of Mathematica, Wolfram|Alpha and the Wolfram Language, is seeking a full-time intern to join its Visualization department this summer, with the option to work part-time this spring semester. The Visualization team aims to bring state-of-the-art visualizations to Wolfram’s users in a clean and intuitive way, using heuristics, automation and the full power of the Wolfram Language to make things as simple as possible across a variety of platforms. Current visualization functions range from general data plots to a wide variety of specific application areas, including finance, geography, statistics, geometry, dates and times, and more.

Common tasks shared by the team include prototyping and implementing functionality, finding creative solutions to hard design and implementation problems, and writing examples for documentation and marketing materials. Large portions of the visualization codebase are written in the Wolfram Language, and the target is usually an abstracted graphics scene language. (In certain cases, there may be JavaScript components as well.)

Requirements

  • Wolfram Language experience (code sample required with application)
  • Enthusiasm regarding work, and an eagerness to find elegant solutions to problems
  • Good communication skills for working in a small team environment
  • A good sense for how to effectively use visualizations, while being able to explore new and innovative approaches to conveying information
  • Experience with modern high-level visualization frameworks such as D3, or low-level geometric data structures in C, is preferred
  • Programming experience using one or more of the following: C, C++, Java, Python
  • Undergrad- or MS-level student studying in the STEM field

Location: Champaign, Illinois
