Improve the efficiency of computer resources usage to speed up Mathematica?

Posted 8 years ago

I am using Mathematica 9. I have noticed that even during intensive (analytic not numeric) computation (e.g. very difficult integrals), Mathematica can take several minutes. When I look at resource usage I find that it is using less than 0.1% of CPU time and has plenty of free memory. Is there a way to improve the efficiency of resource usage to speed things up?

Would you be able to spend some time experimenting with reducing the size and complexity of your notebook until you find a reasonable sized notebook which consistently displays this behavior and then attach that notebook to your post? That might let someone else replicate your result and possibly even help track down the source of the behavior.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think I can do that fairly easily. I'll try to do so in the next day or so.
