I work with Geographic Information Systems, in the fields of environment & ecology — about which I must have soaked up some knowledge over 25 years.
My education was firstly in cartography, and then computing science. How things have changed!
Programming at work: Python for GIS, R for data manipulation & statistics. Both Python and R were revelations: superbly accessible and usable. R is particularly fascinating.
Programming at home: R and Python. Special mention to GeoGebra (another revelation): geometry, algebra, Computer Algebra System, and more. Very hands-on.
JavaScript and Scala are recent explorations: JavaScript due to its ubiquity, Scala for its compilation concepts and Java VM platform.
And naturally, I want to develop expertise in Mathematica and the Wolfram Language. Enthusiastically bought the first book in 1988, but became a user only with Mathematica 9 (Home Edition).
