Can my start up time for Mathematica 10 be decreased?

Since about Version 6 it has taken longer and longer to start up Mathematica. In Version 10 on my HP Pavilion HPE Series it takes a little over a minute. Is this common experience? Is there some way to decrease this time? Does it have any thing to do with virus checking?

I guess that one possible solution is to just leave the Mathematica FrontEnd open all the time, say by keeping the Documentation Center open but minimized.

Mathematica 11.0.1 now available for the Raspberry Pi

Hi all,

Mathematica 11.0.1 is now available for the Raspberry Pi on Raspbian. If you already have Mathematica installed on your Raspberry Pi, you can update with the following:

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade wolfram-engine

If you don't already have Mathematica installed you can run the following commands to install it:

    sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install wolfram-engine

New features for the Raspberry Pi include :

- Neural Network features including constructing custom nets : http://reference.wolfram.com/language/guide/NeuralNetworks.html
- Audio processing features including out of core streaming of large sounds as well as advanced audio processing : http://reference.wolfram.com/language/guide/AudioProcessing.html
- Travel based path plan functions including path finding from one city to another : http://reference.wolfram.com/language/guide/LocationsPathsAndRouting.html
- Channel based communication for sending and receiving messages : http://reference.wolfram.com/language/guide/Channel-BasedCommunication.html
- Powerful and easy scripting through WolframScript : http://reference.wolfram.com/language/ref/program/wolframscript.html
- And many more : http://reference.wolfram.com/language/guide/SummaryOfNewFeaturesIn11.html

Additionally, with the new release of WolframScript on the Raspberry Pi, you can install WolframScript standalone and run it without a local kernel against the cloud using the `-cloud` option. This means you can use the Wolfram Language through WolframScript on the Raspberry Pi without having wolfram-engine installed by running it against the cloud. See the documentation page for WolframScript for more details.

Make Mathematica's interface less blurry?

I run Mathematica 11.2 in Windows 10. I have a 4k monitor (resolution 3840x2160) at work and another at home running at recommended 150% scale. The Mathematica interface looks really blurry and it is painful to read (see attached image, the window behind Mathematica is the browser window where this message was being composed. Browser text is very sharp, as is the rest of Windows. Mathematica text is blurry).

My laptop (Surface book) runs at a resolution of 3000x2000 and 200% scale and Mathematica there looks even blurrier.

High dpi monitors have been out for many years and Mathematica has always been blurry for me on them. Is there a way of making it give good text? Am I missing some non-obvious setting that improves this?

However, I need help finding where to update the API secret I shared after installing the plugin. I cannot find anything in the options.

Where can I update my API secret inside my notebook? Is there some sort of global issue with rate limiting going on right now?

I am still trying to isolate some trigger code examples that I can send to Wolfram support. Are others experiencing such crashes?

Mathematica speedup from 2019 iMac over late 2015 iMac?

My current computer, a late 2015 iMac 27” has a 4 GHz Core i7 processor, 32 GB RAM, 3 TB Fusion drive, and Radeon R9 M395X with 4 GB VRAM, Retina display.

What kind of speedup with Mathematica, if any, might I expect from a new, 2019, iMac 27” with the following configuration?

- 3.6 GHz Core i9 processor (8-core)
- 64GB RAM
- 3 TB Fusion drive
- Radeon Pro Vega 48 with 8GB HBM2 memory

Although this new CPU has Turbo Boost up to 5 GHz, I’m concerned that the “default” of only 3.6 GHZ, being below my current 4 GHz, might impede perfornance.

Presumably the graphics rendering will be faster, right?

Or do the additional cores make up for that difference? In fact, can Mathematica take advantage of those additional cores (without my explicitly coding for parallel kernels)?

The Most Convenient Keyboard Shortcuts Ever

Here are two simple but extremely convenient keyboard shortcuts that I've used for years.

- This post is a favor to all my friends who type slowly (like me)
- These shortcuts simply create a pair of brackets containing a template placeholder as the current new selection
- Essentially, it's just a stripped-down version of the bulky (Command + Shift + K + Up/Down Arrow + Enter) completion

**Favorite Shortcut #1:**
Autocomplete single brackets by pressing `CommandKey + [`

![enter image description here][1]

**Favorite Shortcut #2:** Autocomplete part brackets by pressing `CommandKey + ]`

![enter image description here][2]

## How to set them up ##

On MacOS, first make a backup of the following file, in case you break it:

    FileNameJoin[{$InstallationDirectory, "SystemFiles/FrontEnd/TextResources/Macintosh/KeyEventTranslations.tr"}];

On my machine this path resolves to: *"/Applications/Mathematica.app/Contents/SystemFiles/FrontEnd/TextResources/Macintosh/KeyEventTranslations.tr"*

Then, preferably in a non-Mathematica editor (e.g. Sublime), open the above file and copy-and-paste these following code into the list inside `EventTranslations`. For the first shortcut:

    Item[KeyEvent["[",Modifiers->{Command}],FrontEndExecute[{FrontEnd`NotebookWrite[FrontEnd`InputNotebook[],"[\[SelectionPlaceholder]]"],FrontEndToken["MovePreviousPlaceHolder"]}]]

And for the second (of course making sure they are separated by a comma):

    Item[KeyEvent["]",Modifiers->{Command}],FrontEndExecute[{FrontEnd`NotebookWrite[FrontEnd`InputNotebook[],"\[LeftDoubleBracket]\[SelectionPlaceholder]\[RightDoubleBracket]"],FrontEndToken["MovePreviousPlaceHolder"],FrontEndToken["MovePreviousPlaceHolder"]}]]

Finally, restart Mathematica, and presto, they should both be working. And to remove the shortcuts, simply remove those items or replace the .tr file with the backup.

Mathematica download manager do not start on windows 7, home edition

I've had this problem before, and never got any help. I am not able to install any Wolfram products. I download the download manager .exe OK. But when I run it (by double clicking on it), it hangs. I see it on the task manger. Eventually it times out.

According to instructions, it is supposed to open "immediately". Yet., this has never happened to me. This window never opens. So I have no idea why it says "immediately"

![enter image description here][1]

I made sure also the desktop is clear, just in case it is hiding behind some window.

I had this problem before when I tried to install the Wolfram player. Same thing happens. I download the DM.exe OK. But it never runs. [Here is a link][2]
Today, I wanted to install 11.3 on windows 7. I downloaded `Mathematica_11.3.0_WIN_DM.exe` OK. But again, it does not start.

![enter image description here][3]

I also tried running it as administrator. No help. it still hangs.

I do not use Windows firewall. I use ESET security/anti-virus software. Been using it for many years with no problems from any software. But I also disabled this software now to see if it has any effect, then tried running the Mathematica download manager. It still hanged.

I also booted the PC in safe mode (but with network enabled). Then Tried running DM manager. Again, it hangs. Even in safe mode.

If I leave it running, after about 40 minutes of so, it times out.

![enter image description here][4]

If I try to run it a second time while waiting for the first one, which is still running, I get error that only one instance is allowed to run

![enter image description here][5]

This whole process of installing Mathematica is broke. Before, I would just download the .exe itself. I do not care if it was 10 GB. Now, I can't install any Wolfram product using this download manager thing.

Is it possible to download the actual installer.exe or the product file itself without having to download this small download manager (as used to be the case before?) It does not matter if it too large. I see that on Linux, there is no download manager. But only for windows and Mac. It will be better to also give the choice to customer to either use the download manager or to download the file directly itself, and let **customers decide what to do**.

I have no idea why it does not start. I can't see any errors. I see it sitting there in the task manager and nothing happens.

My PC is home edition, running windows 7, 64 bit. Latest version. Any ideas what to do?

Mathematica support for general ARM chips

Withe the apple silicon and the new snapdragon elite X it seems that the trend is to move towards arm based chips. I know that mathematica does support apple silicon, but are there any plans to support other arm chips? I mean, like a general version of mathematica for the arm chips in linux and windows machines.
