What's the pronunciation of Mathematica?

Posted 4 years ago

Yeah, I'm asking about the pronunciation of the word Mathematica. According to the speeches of Stephen, it seems to be /mæθə'mætikɑ/, but I've never found it in any dictionary.

I can obtain a canonical answer in this forum, right?

Just evaluate this in your Mathematica session:

Speak["Mathematica"]

But how can I get the corresponding international phonetic alphabet (IPA)? WolframAlpha doesn't seem to help.

I'm not sure about the official pronunciation, but for me the name feels like coming from Sir Isaac Newton's Philosophiæ Naturalis Principia Mathematica, so maybe read it as Latin?

/ma.tʰ…Oh seems that I need to learn more about international phonetic alphabet…

The pronunciation given on the page is

(Classical) IPA: /ma.tʰeːˈma.ti.ka/, [ma.t̪ʰeːˈma.t̪ɪ.ka]

(Ecclesiastical) IPA: /ma.teˈma.ti.ka/, [ma.t̪ɛˈmaː.t̪i.ka]

If I understand the wikipedia page of international phonetic alphabet correctly, /tʰ/ is almost /t/, so the pronunciation of mathematica is matematica??
