Changes in Updates to SARS-CoV-2 Sequences in the Wolfram Data Repository

Posted 3 years ago

We've now had over a year of near daily updates to the SARS-CoV-2 data resources, with the Genetic Sequences for the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus repository introduced in early February of 2020 and Protein Sequences for the SARS-CoV-2 Coronavirus repository introduced in April of 2020. At the beginning of the pandemic, it was really important to bring updated sequence data to our community as part of our response to COVID-19. We were all looking to analyze any available data to understand the pandemic for ourselves, and wanted to be sure the Wolfram community had the data they might need.

Our perception is that the need for sequence data has changed: it's no longer about the new regional data that might appear on a particular day, but about longer term trends as the virus mutates and changes take hold. The data is now substantial enough that new daily downloads may be a burden instead of an advantage.

For this reason, we're planning on moving the updates to the SARS-CoV-2 sequence data from daily updates to a reduced regular schedule, effective this week.

Having said that, we don't want to make assumptions about the needs of our community. If you use either of the SARS-CoV-2 sequence repositories mentioned above and have opinions about how we can serve you better, let us know. What kinds of applications are you supporting? What kinds of services do you need? Feel free to reply here to let us know.
