Cannot change options in Option Inspector

Hello all,
I’m completely new to Mathematica and one of the first issues that I have is changing options in Option Inspector. My installation runs under Linux and all options under Option Inspector are grayed. How could I access them? Already tried starting the program as sudo. Doesn’t work.

Found it… The trick was to use Global Preferences for the scope of the settings. After few tries I was able to permanently set all needed options.
