I have a brand new pi. I think they recommend NOOBS first. What OS should I install to be compatible with Mathematica? Any other advice for a pi nubie?

I suggest installing Raspbian with its GUI. That is the standard Unix-type OS for the Pi. You will have a windows-type notebook front end in Mathematica.
