When I solve an equation the Suggestion Bar appears showing the option “apply rules to expr…”. When I click on the option, the word “expression” appears followed by a blank bar for entering rules, I suppose. I’ve seen this for a long time, and have tried a few things without success. I don’t even know how to ask the Documentation Center about it because all my questions miss the point and get no answers. What to do here must be obvious to others, yet I do not have a clue. Please explain.
Hi William, I guess those options like “apply rules to variables” are there in case you want to give optional conditions for the variable (eg. positive, real, in a finite range (a,b) etc.).
Hi Robert,
There may be something to what you say, but have you ever used the option “apply to expression” and gotten the result you wanted with it? When I click on the one you mention, “apply rules to variables,” there is no need to know what to do. I get an instant result.
Note Out[26] is a list of rules (a single rule in this case), so what the Suggestion bars offers is to apply those replacement rules to an expression of our choice (to be entered in the box),
As an example, if we enter t^4 in the box and click OK, the result will be
In[27]:= t^4 /. eq3
Out[27]= {0.150354 s^4}
Hi Ilian,
Your example shows me the way. Thank you.
