Mac Keyboard use in this program to enter text only

I need to know what key or keys one uses to get the Alt 7 in a PC keyboard to enter only text to list a question number such as 1. 2. 3. etc? I tried the alt option key on my Mac keyboard and it enters the paragraph symbol (a reversed P). Help
