Mathematica no longer immediately export graphics files to a disk?

Used in a Do loop, 100s of graphics files sit in memory (adding memory use) before putting them. in their location. They used to always be exported immediately.

No version of Mathematica I have used automatically exported graphics. What version are you using now, and what version used to do this?
