PlotRange not working as expected

On a simple plot, I am trying to make the X and Y axes uniform. Why does the first plot display the curve, but the second does not?

Have you read the documentation for PlotRange?

Plot[Exp[x], {x, 0, 1}, PlotRange → {{0, 1}, {0, 2.5}}]

or

Plot[Exp[x], {x, 0, 1}, PlotRange → Automatic]
