I consider myself a "computer natural scientist" or" "information theoretic biologist". My research focuses on introducing measures of information theory and algorithmic complexity to genomics, systems and network biology.

I am the Editor of the Complex Systems journal founded by Stephen Wolfram in 1987, the first journal in the field.

I am Assistant Professor and Co-director at the Information Dynamics Lab at the Center for Molecular Medicine and SciLife Lab at the Karolinska Institute (the institution that awards the Nobel Prize) in Sweden; and JTF Senior Researcher and PI at the Department of Computer Science, University of Oxford in the UK. I am also the Head of the Algorithmic Nature Group, LABORES, a Paris-based lab, the creators of the Online Algorithmic Complexity Calculator.

I have held various academic visiting positions in the U.S., the UK and Singapore. In Singapore I was a Visiting Professor in 2013 at the Mathematical Institute of the National University. In Pittsburgh, I was a visiting scholar at Carnegie Mellon University in 2008, and in Boston I was at MIT during the Summer of 2007 associated with the NASA Mars Gravity Biosatellite project team. My first postdoctoral position was in the U.K., as a research associate at the Behavioural and Evolutionary Theory lab at the Department of Computer Science at the University of Sheffield.
