Prof. L. A. Sphaier received his B.S. (1998) and M.S. (2000) degrees, both in Mechanical Engineering, from Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), and his Ph.D., also in Mechanical Engineering, from the University of Illinois at Chicago (2005). After obtaining his doctorate degree, he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Fluminense Federal University (UFF), Brazil, in 2006, where he currently holds an associate professor position. Prof. Sphaier has co-authored over 150 refereed journals and conference papers, besides being the author of two book chapters and a textbook (in Portuguese). His research is mainly focused on mathematical modeling and simulation of heat and mass transfer, which includes total heat exchangers, alternative cooling cycles, adsorbed gas storage, and development of hybrid numerical-analytical methods. Some of his recent research activities also include thermal characterization of nano-composite materials and modeling and simulation of transport phenomena in brewing technologies. Prof. Sphaier is also a member of the Brazilian Society for Mechanical Sciences and Engineering (ABCM), and participated as an Affiliate member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC). He is currently an Editor for the International Communications in Heat and and Mass Transfer and the Adjunct Coordinator for the CAPES committee of evaluation of graduate programs in the Engineerings III (mechanical, industrial, aerospace, ocean and other related areas).
