ABOUT ME:

I teach philosophy, peace studies and language learning at College of the Atlantic and am a cofounder and Clerk of the Quaker Institute for the Future. Works include: The Ways of Peace: A Philosophy of Peace as Action; The Will at the Crossroads: A Reconstruction of Kant’s Moral Philosophy; and A Quaker Approach to Research: Collaborative Practice and Communal Discernment. My strongest current interests are reflected in my most recent book: Smarter Planet or Wiser Earth? Dialogue and Collaboration in the Era of Artificial Intelligence which has a Creative Commons version at www.smarterplanetorwiserearth.com. It develops a systematic framework for drawing on cutting edge research in negotiation and conflict resolution to reframe approaches to artificial intelligence and related practices in ethics, economics, and politics. At the heart of the reframing is the shift from merely monological forms of reasoning deploying algorithms of symbolic logic to dialogical reasoning employing the strategies of peacemaking practices from diverse traditions. I am also a singer/songwriter and live with my wife at the edge of Acadia National Park where I enjoy gardening and adventuring with my grandchildren.
