I am a Purépecha scientist, currently leading the biology efforts at the Wolfram Institute, where we're researching different aspects of the theoretical foundations of biology. Before, I was an Omidyar Complexity Fellow at the Santa Fe Institute, where I studied historical linguistics and biology. I got a bachelor in Biomedical Sciences at the National Autonomous University of México, and a PhD in Quantitative Biology at Georgia Tech. I am primarily interested in the fundamental differences between living and non-living systems and the ways formal and computational frameworks can help us understand these distinctions. In my spare time I like listening, playing, and composing music (folk, rock, experimental), as well as playing chess.
