12.0 varied graphical export

Posted 5 years ago

Afternoon everyone,

I've been rendering Encapsulated PostScript (.eps) graphics to insert into LaTeX documents with Mathematica for a long time. It seems with 12.0 the export to this format has changed under the hood, now leveraging Cairo 1.15.4. This seems to change the bounding calculation of such exports. Anyone hoping to update an old LaTeX document (for which precise layouts are notoriously fiddly) using new Mathematica may find it hard to replicate the exact functionality of the old export.

Would it be possible to get more explicit control over things like export sizing, and more explicit guidance on how to exactly specify targets like bounding box in various units? This would make our use of Mathematica a bit more future proof. The generic power of Export[] is awesome, but fine tuning output can be a large investment. Finding that tuning voided is a little souring. At present I'm constrained to 11.3.

Best, David
