Why does Sound[] give me an inert graphic and not play any sound?

Posted 4 years ago

This post from 4 years ago (The above is a 4-year-old post)

I'm trying to follow along in EIWL and learn about sound, but I have exactly the same problem as this guy 4 years back. Unfortunately, I cannot reply to that post, no idea why. Instead I have to start a new thread.

So I just type: Sound[SoundNote[0]] What I type and what I get I get a graphic that looks like what I want. I can click on it and its border highlights in orange. But the little Play button is completely inactive. It's just a dead image.

Yes, I can use Manipulate successfully. Yes, Speak works find. EmitSound does nothing. Is it assuming somewhere that I have MIDI drivers installed or something?

Using version 12.0.0 on Windows 8.1 Pro.

Can you please tell me what is the output of the following code for you:

$AudioOutputDevices
$DefaultAudioOutputDevice

Also, can you play the following:

Audio[File["ExampleData/car.mp3"]]
