{x=2/(?3-1) }={ x^2 -2x -2 = 0}

In the quadratic replace x with 2/(Sqrt[x]-1) and then Simplify the result.

In[1]:= x^2 - 2 x - 2 /. x -> 2/(Sqrt[3] - 1) // Simplify

Out[1]= 0
