Remote kernel hangs and quietly quits

Posted 1 month ago

Hello everyone

I have trouble using Mathematica remotely...

My local machine is a Windows using Mathematica 14.0. The remote machine is a Linux also using Mathematica 14.0. The connection between both machines is via private/public keys so no password is needed.

If I do "ssh user@machine MathKernel" in a terminal, it works and I have the Mathematica prompt.

In Mathematica on the local machine, I have configured the remote kernel using the basic options.

If I try to execute a cell remotely :

  • the cell is marked as "executing"
  • I see in a "top" command on the remote machine that a MathKernel process has launched but then stays at 0% cpu
  • It hangs like this for 30-40 seconds and then it quits with the message "The remote process for kernel 'kernel name' has unexpectedly terminated with error 2. Output from stderr: None"

Any help would be appreciated :)

It sounds like you've diagnosed the source of the issue quite well! We know the general source is the problem machine, and we also know the problem isn't with the commands being given, as it happens with any cell, regardless of its content. Additionally, since it works on the Mac without issue, we can rule out problems with the Mathematica software itself.

Have you tried checking the system logs on the remote machine for any error messages or warnings that might give more insight into why the Math Kernel process is quitting? It might also be helpful to ensure that the problem machine is set up properly to handle the remote connection. If the issue persists, reaching out to Wolfram Support could provide further assistance.

Another question, does Mathematica kernel work on both machines independently?

Yes, Mathematica works perfectly locally on each machine. In fact, this is an issue with this particular local Windows machine : i have another local computer, a Mac, which can use the remote Linux machine without any problem...

Does that happen any cell or just one with a specific command?

It happens with any cell, no matter its content it seems...
