How to design transmitter and receiver optics for a Laser Range Finder?

Posted 4 hours ago

Hi everyone,

I am interested in building an optical system for a laser range finder (LRF).

I come from an embedded electronics background and have recently started exploring optics. I have performed some basic experiments with light and lenses, so I am familiar with fundamental concepts such as collimation, divergence, reflection, and refraction.

I would like to understand how to move from these basics to designing a complete system.

Specifically, I have the following questions:

  1. What are the essential components required for the transmission (transmitter) block in an LRF system?
  2. What are the key elements needed in the receiver block?
  3. How should I approach learning and designing such a system step by step?

I would appreciate any guidance, resources, or suggestions on how to begin building a practical optical setup for this application.

Thank you!
