Put an assumption on the magnitude of z.

Limit[z^n/(1-z), n->Infinity, Assumptions->Abs[z]<1]

(* Out[2]= 0 *)

Limit[z^n/(1-z), n->Infinity, Assumptions->Abs[z]>1]

(* Out[3]= ComplexInfinity *)
