Mathematica won't open, but Kernel is running

Posted 10 years ago

Hi,

I have been using Mathematica 10 perfectly fine up until today, when it has suddenly decided not to work properly and I wondered if anyone could help? When I click to load Mathematica, it starts as normal by bringing up the loading screen, but as soon as it reaches 'Initialising Kernel', it stops doing anything else and doesn't proceed to the open file screen or let me open any notebooks. When I look on task manager, I see that the kernel is using about 30% of my CPU, but Mathematica itself is just a background process and not doing anything. I don't know why this has happened and when I stop the kernel running on task manager, then Mathematica just produces a "why the bleep" pop up saying the Kernel has stopped and then stops running completely. Any ideas on how I can fix this or if it is a common problem?

Thanks for your help,

Chris

The solutions in the above link didn't quite work for me. I opened MathKernel (found in Mathematica's program file folder or run in command line) instead. Then ran the paclet update by evaluating PacletUpdate["CloudObject"] (with network connected). Mathematica was then able to open normally.
