Teaching mathematics 60 years. The last 37 as a tutor ages 3-73, all abilities. My book "Calculus By and For Young People (ages 7, yes 7 and up)" was reviewed in the Dec. '88 issue of Scientific American. I often ask my students to make up problems they are working on in school. Today one of my students, a HS sophomore made up this problem: Solve for R in this equation: (6x^2-4x-12)/R = 3x+6R . He worked on it, I worked on it and we worked on it. And Wolfram Alpha Pro didn't get a statement R= ... What would you get?
