Fred Simons studied mathematics at the University of Amsterdam. In 1965 he moved to Eindhoven University of Technology, where he obtained his PhD in 1971. In 1972 he became a lecturer and in 1980 a full professor. His field of work became the use of computers in mathematics education, an area in which he was one of the pioneers. He has been a user of Mathematica since version 1.1. After his early retirement in 1998, he continued to regularly teach Mathematica courses until 2023.
