ABOUT ME:

I'm a mathematician, gardener and teacher who often writes code, most of it now in Mathematica.

Qualifications: I hold a 1st class degree in Maths and a PhD in Pure Maths from the University of Leeds. I am a published academic and a certified Wolfram trainer. QTLS teaching certification awarded in 2019.

Career and personal life:

Research assistant at the Laboratory For Computer Science at Edinburgh University, 2 years. Lecturer in Theoretical Computer Science, Sheffield University, 12 years. Created and delivered courses in Excel, software testing, functional programming, logic programming, programming language semantics and mathematical models of concurrency such as CCS. Worked with Michael Mendler and a small group of research students and fellows to investigate and publish the proof and model theory of Lax Logic.

I moved to Devon in 2004 and taught maths with the Open University and GCSE, A level and occasionally university level maths as a private tutor. Worked for 3 years as a director and publisher with Triarchy Press, a small publishing house based in Dorset. I gained QTLS certification at South Devon College during a 5-year part-time stint as a lecturer in Mathematics and in Computer Science. I used Mathematica a lot in this period, for consultancy, teaching, horticulture, managing accounts and for my own original geometrical research. I now spend much of my time with my lovely wife, developing our horticultural enterprise on 6 acres of pasture near Totnes and repairing, remodelling and upgrading our beautiful but demanding farmhouse. I have one daughter and 3 stepdaughters. I regularly consult and sometimes contribute to Stack Exchange Mathematica.

Current interests

I am part of a growing community growing fruit, vegetables, nuts and herbs to organic standards for local consumption. We apply permaculture principles wherever we can and are fans of no dig, inspired by Charles Dowding. Sociocracy fascinates me and I aim to learn how to use it to improve social functioning in my area.
