I am a graduate of the U. S. Military Academy (BS) and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (MS(70} & Ph.D..(84)). I am retired from the Army after 28 years (14 active and 14 reserve) as an infantryman. I am also retired from Siena College after 24 years. While on active duty I taught at USMA for three years.I have always been interested in the practical and applied side of mathematics. I got interested in environmental acoustics while a student for my Ph. D. I spent time working with oceanic fronts that led to my dissertation, "A mathematical model of oceanic fronts". During my time as a student I taught classes at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and at Union College. Upon completion of my terminal degree, I started teaching at Siena College. With a colleague, Dr. Susan Hurley, we developed and introduced a calculus laboratory to the curriculum. It remains and has been extended to other appropriate mathematics courses. I was awarded a grant from the NSF to establish a computer laboratory. We chose to install Mathematica on all computers and to devise laboratory exercises using the capabilities of it. I have many interests and found that these could be energized by conducting independent study courses with students. I had been the only advisor for students seeking employment as actuary upon graduation. I became interested in risk analysis. This prompted my development of a bachelor of science degree in Actuarial Science with a colleague, Dr. John O'Neill. This program was approved and implemented shortly after I retired. I currently use Mathematica to explore ideas graphically and to solve problems with my son, an environmental engineer.
