How do I measure the area of an image using my mouse to outline the border?

A possible workflow:
use the Mask Tool in the image toolbar to create a mask of the area you care about (using your mouse);
select Copy > Mask as an image;
use
ComponentMeasurements[mask, "Area"]
.
