I agree with you, that's a very good way to minimize the loss function. The idea was to show intermediate steps for teaching purposes.

Let me ask you a question, why did you include [[2]] in the following expression:

p/.FullSimplify[Minimize[{L,\[Lambda]<1},p]][[2]]

Yep, I thought that too. Very clear and easy to understand.

Minimize[ ] gives its output in the form of
{minimum value of the objective function, p->minimizing value of the variable}

So I have to choose the second part ([[2]]) of the output, then apply p/. to extract the value of p that makes L minimum.
