smoothing the numerical data

I am beginner on mathematica. I want to smooth the numerical data using the Digital Butterworth Filter. What should I do? I think use "ButterworthFilterModel", "ToDiscreteTimeModel" and "OutputResponse". I Don't know exactly how to implement these functions.
