Simple Algebra Problem, Strange Result

I'm new to Mathematica and 'm going through Mathematica, by Eugene Don.

One of the early problems is to "Compute the sum of 2x+3, 5x+9, and 4x+2.

I enter the following:

(2 x + 3) + (5 x + 9) + (4 x + 2)

When I type "Shift" + "Enter" (I'm on a Mac), I get:

1049242043

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,

Tony

You have 95385639 stored for x. Enter

x=.

and x will become a variable again.

Then enter

(2 x + 3) + (5 x + 9) + (4 x + 2)
