Wolfram Cloud App (iOS) — external keyboard and navigation

Posted 9 years ago

Hello! First-ever question here from a total noob.

Using a USB keyboard on an iPad Pro in the Wolfram Cloud App which I am loving (loving!).

Everything is wonderful, and everything works as expected, except for a curious thing:

Navigating with arrow keys doesn't work. Not at all. All other keys work as expected. This is SO weird, it must be a bug.

THEREFORE to move positions on a code line, or to move between code lines, I have to pick up a stylus, and zero-in (which ain't easy) to the precise insertion point to start typing again.

Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks, everybody.

Well finally there's an update! But how disappointing!!! Whilst arrow key navigation now works, copying and pasting doesn't... doing the obvious thing, holding down shift with the arrow keys disables the arrow keys!!! so you can't highlight pieces of text so in other words there is still no way to carry out the typical kind of copy paste operation you'd do on the desktop version...

I can't do this either for both Safari/web version and the iOS app. I also use the iPad Pro.

We certainly need full keyboard functionality (arrow key navigation, copy/paste, word/line selection, etc.) for web and iOS app versions to be much more useful.

I recently received this from Wolfram Support ...

Hi Andrew, Thank you for contacting Wolfram Technical Support. I am sorry to hear about the inconvenience caused while using Mathematica Online from the keyboard of the ipad. For the touchscreen on your iPad, double tap in the area you would like to copy. There should be a popup and blue anchors on your screen. You can drag these blue anchors to select the exact text you'd like to copy. Once you have selected it, you just tap Copy or Cut.

Does this actually work for anyone?!?!? I mean it certainly doesn't work with my iPadPro... I've asked them to send some screenshots of it working since quite frankly I'm not sure I believe it....

Hopefully this will be resolved soon. I am also having the same problem in the Safari IOS version.

Issues are apparently now with the developers...

yes of course - go back to accessing the files through the browser and then download from there... thanks!

it must be said though that you shouldn't really need to do that... i somehow feel the wolfram cloud app still has a way to go...

how do I get that pdf onto my ipad?

Pictures in the following blog gives you a hint how to get the pdf onto your iPad.

https://mmaykf.wordpress.com/2016/02/17/ipad-pro-%E3%81%A7-mathematica-online-%E3%82%92%E4%BD%BF%E3%81%86%E5%B7%A5%E5%A4%AB/

You can download the pdf by selecting Download in popup menu. It is displayed in iBook.

Thanks very much! This seems to work fine... but then the problem is - if I have, say, a pdf file in my cloud directory accessible from the app, how do I get that pdf onto my ipad? Sounds pretty basic but i can't see how to do it... any ideas? Also on the navigation issue i have not yet had any feedback....

Something weird happened there with a reply to an earlier comment - when I came to reply it disappeared... It has now reappeared... So I moved my reply there. I have not yet had any response from support re the navigation issue.

One other question if I export a plot (using the cloud app again) where does it go? I don't see it among my (cloud based) files. When I do the same thing using the browser based version from a desktop machine it works fine... Any ideas?

Mathematica Online on Safari is better than the Wolfram Cloud app, because it has a file management functionality.
You should better use SetDirectory[NotebookDirectory[]] before exporting a plot. You will find the pdf file.

Yes - waiting for a response - will update here when I hear back... Also submitted feedback through the app...

Have you tried contacting Wolfram Support directly?

Please don't close the thread! I'm also having problems using the cloud app with my iPad Pro + Apple keyboard... I'm sure we're not the only ones! Is there any plan for an update to address this issue in the near future?

I think I see the problem now.

Maybe this will help other newcomers to Wolfram Cloud in general, and the Wolfram Cloud iOS app in particular.

Wolfram Cloud is shockingly far from prime time-ready.

It's amazing bad quality some companies sell.

Mods: close this thread. I'm done here.
