[VOLUNTEER] Wolfram Language Worldwide Translations Project

Dear Wolfram community and Wolfram Language enthusiasts,

We have started an exciting new project and are looking for YOUR help.

As part of the new Wolfram Language Worldwide Translations Project we are looking for volunteers to help translate our symbol names into other languages. Translated symbols can then be enabled to show as captions on any piece of code. We are already offering code captions in Japanese, Traditional as well as Simplified Chinese, Korean, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, German, French, and Portuguese. Here is an example taken from our documentation:

With your help we would like to greatly expand the languages covered.

WhatÂ’s in it for you? You are going to be part of an unprecedented effort to make a leading programming language accessible to non-English speaking programming novices. Your contribution is going to make programming and understanding programs in the Wolfram Language much easier for hundreds of thousands of your fellow countrymen.

The suggestions are btw pretty good (in the case of Dutch), but is very persistent on translation Decomposition with ontleding while there is also decompositie in Dutch. Decomposition and decompositie both have the mathematical connotation and the one of a rotting body. While ontleding does not have this rotting connotation (but rather 'dissection'), it can also be used in the mathematical sense. I prefer though, to use the one that is closest to English, despite being a bit longer.

Well, I am happy to hear that the suggestions provide support as well as entertainment ;) And you'll always have the last word on what should be chosen. If you prefer "decompositie" then that's just it. Thank you!

Could you also indicate what the stance is on capitals? For example, AbelianGroup is translated to Abelse groep in dutch, a direct translation. Though on several places on the internet I've also seen abelse groep (no capital). I would favour the usage of capitals as it origins from a name (but is not a name directly).

This might be a question for Dutch speaking though; normally if it is a derived word (Abelian/Abelse from Abel), then no capital in Dutch. Except when:

"Even if the name of a person is unchanged used to describe an object, void the capital. 
Only if the object is the product of the labor and creativity of the person mentioned, we reserve the capital. 
This applies to paintings, books, clothing or objects that have a person's name as a brand name.
The personal names given to ships or other vehicles, the capital preserved."

So is the Abelian group part of his labour? his brand? or creativity? I guess so? I presume the translations the community provides will be checked by a real translator?!

Sander, capitals should be treated whichever way is the preferred way in your native language. AbelianGroup is an interesting case. I searched what we do in German (I am German). I found both upper and lower capitals. In the Wolfram Language we chose upper capitals. In a case like this any choice seems reasonable.

Thanks it works now I think! Could you also change the color of < enter text or select best option > to red or so (or empty)? When you scroll through a document you can then easily spot the ones that are empty, now my brain has to scan 1 by 1 very slowly...

Even better would be that once you press submit, it deletes those entries from the Notebook, or marks them green or ....

I'm not sure if the NB has the function? (yes I have dynamics enabled)

I downloaded an NB file with a bunch of translations (Dutch statistics 1). How do I/where do I submit it?

Hi Sander, It's great to see such a quick response. In the top right corner of each notebook you'll find a "Submit" button. This will submit your translations into a specific databin. Please note that you do not need to have the entire notebook translated. Upon submission it'll give you a quick report on how many changes were found and successfully submitted.

The given translations in the right column are just suggestions. If you find them to be appropriate, please choose one and you'll see that the text field gets auto-filled with that translation. That field is editable, so you can make changes, or type your own translation as needed.
