Suppress the " * " multiplication symbol in the Inactivate output?

Posted 9 years ago

Regarding the screenshot below, can the " * " multiplication symbol in the Inactivate output be suppressed?

Would it also be possible to convert " + - " to " - "?

Thanks!

Joe

The (* at the beginning and *) at the end of the line is just the way that Mathematica allows one to include comments (i.e., text that is not executed or interpreted).

Gianluca,

I hope you do not mind me adding an additional comment and question to your post.

I was disappointed that TraditionalForm did not produce the desired output, which I thought looked quite traditional.

Might the output of Inactivate be altered in the front end or defined styles. (Please excuse any ignorance demonstrated by this question.)

Thanks!

Joe

Jim,

That looks great.

Thanks for the prompt reply and please excuse my less-than-prompt response.

Later today or tomorrow, I am going to try remove the space between the 5 and the x, which will cause the outcome to go from great to perfect.

Thanks, again.

Before I end however, I am curious about the existence of the " ( * " and the " * ) " at the beginning and end of the outputs, respectively. (Please see below.)

Thanks, again, once last time.

Joe

I think that the Inactive family of functions is a great idea, but it would be vastly more useful if the output were typeset as if Plus, Power and Times were active (optionally, at the very least). Anyone can explain the purpose of the current strange typesetting style of Inactive expressions?
