At the age of 21, with a letter of introduction mailed ahead by Dr. Wiggins, music department head at West Virginia State University, I traveled to Cologne, Germany where I met with Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Stockhausen sent me to Munich, where after two semesters studying counterpoint with Gunther Bialas and a summer at the Goethe Institute, I was back in Cologne, where I pretty much stayed for the next 4 years, enrolled at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik as a member of the Stockhausen class.
