For example, I want to enter:
5 raised to the 7th power without having to say "5^7"

You can always type = followed by what you need :-)

And if you want the power in a superscript, then 5 ctrl^ 7 puts the 7 as a superscript exponent. Use ctrl-space to fininsh inputting the exponent.

Assuming that you are talking about Mathematica rather than Wolfram|Alpha, you can also do various formatting tasks using the "Basic Math Assistant Palette" .
