Up/Down keys do not recall previous input in "math"

The manual says that you can recall previous input by pressing up or down. This does not work. Instead, these keys produce the error message you get when attempting to type into the terminal when a program is running (such as "^[[A"). Running with sudo or & does not fix the problem. How does this function really work?

@Coppola, Could you please post the system information about your machine? I *cannot* reproduce this issue with (Mathematica 9 + Mac OS X 10.8.4) in terminal.

I am using kubuntu. $ cd $home $ math Mathematica 7.0 for Linux x86 (64-bit) Copyright 1988-2009 Wolfram Research, Inc. In[1]:= 1+1 Out[1]= 2 In[2]:= D[x^2,x] Out[2]= 2 x In[3]:= ^[[A

I see. You may have to get version 9 to use this feature in terminal.

Wow. I'm not going to upgrade for a simple feature like that. They should put it in all versions of math

I think there are (unsupported) ways to do this, even in Mathematica 7, for example look here: http://code.activestate.com/recipes/363500-mathematica-with-a-gnu-readline-input/ I agree that this by itself is not a good reason to upgrade, but we did add a few more things to Mathematica 8 and Mathematica 9: http://www.wolfram.com/mathematica/new-in-8/ http://www.wolfram.com/mathematica/new-in-9/ (And we always interested in hearing what you think would make Mathematica even better).
