The Moon can look blue due to atmospheric events, but this happens very rarely. Hence the expression "once in a blue moon".

It seems the current definition of "monthly blue moon" was invented in the 1940's, because no older records of similar use have been found.

Thank you for explaining this. I always wondered how frequent blue moons were.

Btw, do you know why it called "blue"?
